00Earned Outreach

Templates for pitching editors and micro-creators.

Copy, personalise, send. Written in the VAEV voice — quiet, specific, no press-kit theatrics. Tuned for a one-person founder with limited time and no agency behind them.

01How to use these

Five rules before you send anything.

  1. 01

    Personalise the first line

Reference a specific piece, post or line. If you can't, don't send it — pick a different recipient.

  2. 02

    One ask, one link

The ask is a postal address, not coverage. One URL in the whole email, at the bottom.

  3. 03

    No attachments

No PDFs, no press kits, no lookbooks in the first email. Attachments trigger spam filters and read as agency.

  4. 04

    Follow up once

One follow-up after 10–14 days. Then stop. Silence is a valid answer.

  5. 05

    Log every send

Keep a simple sheet: name, publication, date sent, date replied, outcome. Twenty warm relationships beat two hundred cold sends.

A quieter deodorant — for your consideration
Hi {{first_name}},

I've been reading your work at {{publication}} — {{recent_piece}} stayed with me, particularly {{specific_line}}.

I'm {{your_name}}, the founder of VAEV. We're a small Australian studio making a single deodorant designed like a fragrance: microbiome-conscious, aluminium-free, and built around a slow scent arc rather than a top note that disappears by lunch.

The first drop is 500 numbered bottles. It ships {{season}} {{year}}. I'm not chasing coverage — I'd like to send you a bottle before it's public so you can decide, on your own time, whether it belongs in anything you're writing.

Postal address? Happy to send with no strings.

500 bottles, one scent, no aluminium
Hi {{first_name}},

VAEV is a small deodorant studio out of {{city}}. One product, one scent, made in a run of 500 numbered aluminium-free bottles.

I've followed {{publication}}'s coverage of small studios — {{example}} in particular — and thought the object itself might be worth a look, regardless of the category.

I can send a sample and the making-of notes (formulation, bottle, label print run) if useful. No embargo, no deadline pressure.

Warmly,

Following up — VAEV
Hi {{first_name}},

Circling back once in case my note got buried. Still very happy to send a bottle if a postal address suits — no pressure to write about it.

If it's not for you or the timing is off, a one-line no is genuinely appreciated so I stop cluttering your inbox.

Thanks either way,

Quick note: VAEV's first drop opens publicly on {{launch_date}}. 500 numbered bottles, first-come.

If you'd like anything in advance — extra images, formulation detail, a quote from me, an interview — reply and I'll turn it around within a day.

Thank you for the earlier read.

Start with a specific, everyday frustration the reader recognises.
Subject
The thing I kept reaching past
I spent two years reaching past every deodorant on the shelf.

They either looked like medical packaging or smelled like a teenager's locker room. The ones that were beautiful didn't work past midday. The ones that worked were built around aluminium — and I wanted to see if a daily scent object could exist without it.

So I made one.

VAEV is a single aluminium-free deodorant, designed like a fragrance: a slow scent arc that warms with body heat, not a top note that disappears by 11am. The first run is 500 numbered bottles. That's it for this year.

Subject
500 bottles, one room
The first VAEV run is 500 bottles, filled in one room, one day.

Not a warehouse. Not a line. One small batch, numbered by hand, sent out in the order they were filled. There is no restock button for the Founding 500. When they're gone, the next run won't be the same scent arc.

I wanted the first object to feel like a small-press book — something you hold and know won't be reprinted identically.

Photos from the room are below. If one of these numbers should be yours:

Category education — why aluminium-free still has to perform.

Use when: Mid-waitlist, when people are comparing but not yet committing.

Hook
Acknowledge the scepticism. Prove the object with a single fact.
Subject
Aluminium-free is not enough
A lot of aluminium-free deodorants ask you to compromise. They smell nice for an hour, then they quit.

I started VAEV with one rule: it had to work in heat, in a meeting, on a train, after a run. The scent arc is slow by design — it releases as temperature rises, not in one blast at 8am. The base is microbiome-conscious, so it doesn't carpet-bomb the skin to get there.

That means it costs more to make. And it means one bottle lasts longer than you'd expect.

The Founding 500 opens in 48 hours.

500 numbered bottles. One scent. First-come, first-served. After that, the first run is gone.

Let real customers answer objections the founder can't.

What three people told me
Three emails I received this week:

"I wore it to a wedding in 32 degrees. Still there at midnight."
"It sits on the shelf next to my Le Labo and doesn't look lost."
"My partner stole it. Do you sell two?"

The first 500 are out in the world now. If yours is working for you, the simplest thing you can do is forward this to one person who would never buy deodorant online — but might try a scent object.

06Guest post pitches

Ready-to-send newsletter guest post blurbs.

Each blurb includes the core idea, why it matters now, and a tight CTA. Copy the whole card, personalise the target publication, and send.

Guest post pitch

The deodorant I couldn't find

Target: Beauty / grooming newsletter

Core idea

A founder-led take on why most aluminium-free deodorants ask users to compromise on performance — and how VAEV reframes deodorant as a daily scent object rather than a functional category.

Why now

The first 500-bottle run is about to ship. After years of clean-beauty greenwashing, readers are looking for a specific, credible point of view on what 'clean' actually has to deliver.

CTA

Happy to send a 600-word draft for your consideration. Would you be open to a guest post?

Guest post pitch

Made in a room, not a factory

Target: Design / lifestyle newsletter

Core idea

The object story behind a 500-bottle small-batch run: numbered by hand, filled in one room, with no restock button and no warehouse aesthetic.

Why now

Audiences are tiring of unlimited DTC drops. Scarcity-as-craft is a fresh editorial angle for readers who care about how objects are made and why limited runs matter.

CTA

I can share process photos and making-of notes. Would this work as a short guest feature?

Guest post pitch

What aluminium-free forgot

Target: Clean beauty / wellness newsletter

Core idea

A category-education piece that names the compromise most natural deodorants demand, then explains a different formulation philosophy: microbiome-conscious, slow-release, and built to last in heat.

Why now

Scepticism about 'clean' claims is high. A specific, technical counter-argument is more useful to readers than another list of ingredients to avoid.

CTA

I'd love to write a 500-word explainer for your readers. Does this fit your editorial calendar?

Guest post pitch

A slow scent arc

Target: Fragrance / scent newsletter

Core idea

Why VAEV was designed to warm with body heat instead of blasting a synthetic top note at 8am — and what that means for treating deodorant as a fragrance category.

Why now

Fragrance and function are converging in grooming. The scent-as-object story is a natural fit for audiences who already think about perfume as a daily ritual.

CTA

Could I send a 400-word draft on scent as a daily ritual?

Guest post pitch

The first 500

Target: Solo-founder / indie business newsletter

Core idea

A behind-the-scenes look at launching a physical product as a one-person operation: no agency, no warehouse, and a first run of 500 numbered bottles.

Why now

The anti-scale, solo-founder narrative is resonant in independent media right now. This is a timely, human story about choosing smallness on purpose.

CTA

Would your readers be interested in a behind-the-scenes look at the first drop?

07Follow-up sequence

Three touches after the pitch, then stop.

A quiet cadence for the editor and creator pitches above: a nudge on day 2, a value-add on day 5, and a graceful close on day 9. Each note reuses an existing VAEV hook so the voice stays consistent across the thread.

Day 2Follow-up

Soft nudge — top of inbox, no pressure.

Reuses: ‘The deodorant I couldn't find’.

Send when: 48 hours after the original pitch. Tuesday–Thursday, 9–11am local.

Subject

Quick nudge — {{recent_piece}}

Hi {{first_name}},

Landing this back at the top of your inbox in case it slipped past. Original note below — no reply needed if it isn't a fit.

The short version: I made the aluminium-free deodorant I couldn't find, designed like a fragrance that warms with body heat. First run is 500 numbered bottles out of {{city}}.

Happy to send one to try, no coverage expected.

{{your_name}}
Day 5Follow-up

Add value — give them something usable, not another ask.

Reuses: ‘Made in a room, not a factory’ / ‘500 bottles, not 500,000’.

Send when: Five days after the original pitch. Only if day 2 also went unanswered.

Subject

One thing that might be useful — {{publication}}

Hi {{first_name}},

Not chasing — wanted to send one thing in case it's useful for a future piece.

I'm keeping a short log of what a 500-bottle small-batch run actually looks like from a one-person operation: filling by hand, numbering each bottle, no warehouse, no restock button. Happy to share the process notes and a few photos if the ‘how objects are made’ angle ever fits your calendar.

No reply needed. If it's a no on VAEV itself, that's completely fine.

{{your_name}}
Day 9Follow-up

Clean close — give a graceful out, keep the door open.

Reuses: ‘Numbered, not unlimited’.

Send when: Nine days after the original pitch. Final touch — do not send anything after this.

Subject

Last note from me — {{publication}}

Hi {{first_name}},

Last note from me on this so I'm not cluttering your inbox.

The first drop is 500 numbered bottles and I'd rather you have one before it opens than after. If it isn't for you or the publication, silence is a completely fine answer — I won't follow up again.

If timing shifts later in the year, my email is always open.
